Marvel is officially moving ahead with a solo Black Widow movie, hiring screenwriter Jac Schaeffer to write the script. This will be the first standalone film for Scarlett Johansson’s super-spy, who was first introduced in Iron Man 2, before becoming a more notable Marvel hero in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.
According to Variety, Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several writers before choosing Schaeffer, and Marvel employees met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a Black Widow movie.
Fans of the character have been pushing for a solo film since Black Widow was first introduced, and after the monumental success of last year’s Wonder Woman, it’s not surprising to see that Marvel has finally given the go-ahead. Between Johansson’s popularity in Hollywood and Black Widow’s already established role in the MCU, it makes sense that Marvel would want to develop a solo film and give this character her thoroughly deserved solo outing.
