Earlier today Disney announced that it will acquire a large chunk of 21st Century Fox, including the rights to Marvel characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Of course, this immediately sparked fear that the R-rated tone of Deadpool wouldn’t be able to continue but it looks like Disney is prepared to make more adult superhero films.
In a call with investors, Disney boss Bob Iger addressed the Deadpool franchise, stating that Ryan Reynolds’ raunchy superhero can continue after the sale.
“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”
This will undoubtedly calm a lot of fear in the fan community. In the past few years Fox has built a good reputation by making compelling R-rated superhero movies, which started with Deadpool and continued with Logan. Personally, it’s exciting to know that Deadpool will (probably) continue over at Disney and possibly connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
