If you were wondering where Lucasfilm will take the Star Wars franchise after Episode IX, you have your answer. Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has signed on to develop a new trilogy of Star Wars movies and will write/direct the first film.
The news was announced by StarWars.com, who also stated that the films will be separate from the Skywalker saga and will “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement alongside the announcement.
“Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology, and we feel lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement.
