From Iron Man (2008) to Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Marvel Studios has been playing the superhero game for quite a while, creating one of the most beloved franchises/cinematic universes the film industry has ever seen, but not everything about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is perfect. Many fans have criticised the MCU for its lack of well-developed villains, and while I tend to agree, there are a few exceptions.
With Thor: Ragnarok now in theatres, I have decided to discuss and rank my five favourite Marvel Cinematic Universe villains. Please note that this list only contains characters that exist within the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, meaning villains from the Marvel/Netflix shows are not included.
Check out the list below:
The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Thanos might be the most powerful villain we’ve met in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we simply haven’t seen enough of him yet. Hopefully, his more significant role in Avengers: Infinity War will land him higher on the list but until then, Thanos is my fifth favourite villain in the MCU.
Having seen Thor: Ragnarok three times (so far), I have no doubts that Cate Blanchett’s Hela belongs in this top five. Delivering a powerful, grandiose, and badass villain, Cate Blanchett is one of the most memorable actors in the MCU.
Note: To stay away from spoiler territory, I will not divulge more reasons as to why Hela belongs on this ranking.
3. The Winter Soldier
Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War.
While many will argue that The Winter Soldier isn’t “technically” a villain, his role in the second Captain America movie places him at number three.
Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of The Winter Soldier created one of the most likeable and conflicted villains we’ve ever seen, and the brainwashed element of the character opened the door for the Russo Brothers to build a great character arc for a Marvel villain.
Out of every villain on this list, The Vulture was the most surprising. Portrayed by Michael Keaton, The Vulture is easily the most terrifying Marvel villain we’ve seen and was the perfect “baddie” to face our new Spider-Man.
Hopefully, we’ll see more of The Vulture in the MCU moving forward, because if developed properly this could easily become the best Marvel villain.
Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok.
While it might be the obvious choice, it’s hard to deny that Loki is an amazing movie villain. Perhaps it’s because we’ve been given the opportunity to see Loki develop over several movies, but Tom Hiddleston does a great job of expanding the character with every new appearance.
