After months of uncontrollable anticipation, Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is now in theatres and the God of Thunder is finally given the opportunity to shine amongst his co-workers aka The Avengers. While Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s fair to say that the previous Thor movies have failed to hit the mark. That being said, with Taika Waitit at the helm, Thor: Ragnarok stands out as one of the most exhilarating adventures the MCU has ever produced.

Taking its central character away from Earth, Thor: Ragnarok sees the God of Thunder team-up with his fellow Avenger, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), as well as newcomer Valkyrie, portrayed by the incredible Tessa Thompson. Returning for Thor’s latest outing is, of course, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Idris Elba as Heimdall.

Having now seen the film, I’ve decided to collect my thoughts and have come up with the five reasons I think fans will adore Thor: Ragnarok

The Soundtrack Is Killer…

While Marvel isn’t known for delivering great soundtracks and character themes, Thor: Ragnarok has one of the most enjoyable and memorable scores in recent memory. Now available to download, Mark Mothersbaugh’s score perfectly blends with the wacky style of the film, while at the same time offering the anticipated Marvel-esque composition.

Looking closer at the soundtrack, it’s not only Mothersbaugh’s fantastic score that steals the show. Waititi’s expert choice of music works perfectly for the tone of the film and is used only when necessary and fun for the audience.

The New Additions Kick-Ass…

If the trailers don’t already have you sold, let me assure you that Waititi has done an excellent job with the casting. From Cate Blanchett’s full-on portrayal of a comic book villain to Tessa Thompson’s scene-stealing Valkyrie, there’s not a single character or actor that isn’t perfectly placed in Thor: Ragnarok. Not to mention Jeff Goldblum, who dials his Goldblum-ness up to eleven for his first appearance as The Grand Master.

It’s also worth noting that this is possibly the greatest Marvel film for Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk. With Waititi’s unique sense of humour, Ruffalo is able to try some new things and truly make the Hulk a great character, not just a one-trick pony.

It’s The Funniest Marvel Film Yet…

Between the Guardians of the Galaxy films and the surprise-hit Ant-ManMarvel Studios has never shied away from the lighter side of superhero movies, but Thor: Ragnarok reaches an entirely new level of funny, and that comedy comes from surprising places. Chris Hemsworth has teased his comedy chops in the past, but the actor fully jumps at the opportunity to test his skills, and play with the conventions of the character.

Looking at director Taika Waititi’s filmography, it’s not exactly surprising to see Marvel take a more comedic approach with Thor: Ragnarok. Obviously, Waititi is no stranger to humour, having directed last years comedy masterpiece, Hunt For The Wilderpeople and the ever-impressive What We Do In The Shadows but the way in which Waititi is able to blend his sense of humour with a property like Thor is “mighty” impressive.

Waititi’s Style Is Absolutely Bonkers…

Waititi might have directed some of the best “indie” films in recent memory, but Thor: Ragnarok gives the director a better opportunity to explore his filmmaking style, and it’s fair to say that this guy took that opportunity and ran with it. Following James Gunn’s example, Waititi has created one of the most exciting and stylish Marvel films ever, completely disregarding the belief that all Marvel films need to look and feel the same.

Using bright and vibrant colours, Waititi is able to give life to the various planets and locations, creating a visually unique chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Chris Hemsworth Delivers A Great Performance…

Having done a great job in The Avengers films, it would be unfair to say that Chris Hemsworth hasn’t been great as Thor. With that said, looking at what the actor has done in Thor: Ragnarok, it’s clear that Hemsworth is having a lot more fun with the character and is willing to try something different with his performance.

Waititi gives Hemsworth a chance to stretch his legs and get away from the “usual” rules that confined how he should portray Thor. This opens the door for Hemsworth to offer a new and exciting portrayal, which might be one of the most entertaining character performances in a superhero movie. It won’t be surprising if fans walk out of Thor: Ragnarok with a new favourite Avenger.

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok–the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization–at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger–the Incredible Hulk!
