Taika Waititi is already finding a massive amount of success with his first big-budget project Thor: Ragnarok, but don’t expect him to jump on to another beloved franchise.
Talking to the New York Times, Waititi discusses his chances of directing a Star Wars movie, and it sounds like the chances are slim.
“That particular franchise seems really hard. There’s not much room for someone like me. Through its narrow canon, the tone of Star Wars has always been determinedly self-serious, whereas the Marvel movies, like the decades of comics they sprang from, veer wildly from high drama to low comedy. And improvisation has been a tool in every Marvel movie since Robert Downey Jr. riffed his way through Iron Man.”
While I would personally love to see Waititi tackle a Star Wars spin-off, his statement is 100% correct. Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise doesn’t seem prepared for the unique style and comedy that Waititi brings to each of his movies.
