Since the release of Deadpool and more recently Logan, fans have wondered if Marvel Studios would ever release an R-rated superhero movie. The studio has access to a large variety of darker characters and according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, an R-rated Marvel movie isn’t out of the question.
“I don’t think it’s out of the question. When I started at Marvel seventeen years ago, the Blade franchise was doing very well. A lot of people didn’t even know that it was based on a Marvel character because at the time they sort of hid the fact it was Marvel. So, not out of the question, but not something we’re working on right now,”
An important thing to note is that Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, which isn’t generally known for releasing R-rated movies. It is interesting, to see that Marvel isn’t closing the door on the possibility of an R-rated MCU movie, even if the day never comes.
The next R-rated superhero movie will be Venom, which is being released by Sony Pictures in its Spider-Man Universe. Since the announcement of a Venom movie, it’s been unclear if the character will follow in Spider-Man’s footsteps and exist within the MCU but we finally have our answer from Feige himself.
“For now, there is no plan for Venom in the MCU. It’s a Sony Project.”
I’m still not convinced that a Venom movie can exist without Spider-Man, but I am interested to see what Sony has planned for the character and will still be buying my ticket on opening day in 2018.
