Earlier today it was revealed that the Resident Evil franchise is going to be rebooted with the intention to make six new movies. Now Deadline reports that James Wan has joined to produce the first of the rebooted movies and the script is penned by Greg Russo. Wan is known for producing films like Lights Out, Annabelle and Saw. He is also directing the solo Aquaman movie. Greg Russo recently wrote the Mortal Kombat script alongside Wan, so the pair has previously worked together on another project.
While Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was only released last year, it’s not completely surprising to hear that the franchise will be rebooted. The Resident Evil movies have grossed a total of $1.2B worldwide and are the highest-grossing films based on a video game series.
